In the event you are not yet aware, we regret to inform you that Dr. John Schmidt died on January 4, 2014, and that after 66 years in business, Schmidt Chiropractic will be closing. In addition to informing you of this unfortunate news, and provide you patient record information, we wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your support of our local family business.
The clinic was started in 1947 by Dr. John’s father, Ralph Schmidt, who chose to live in Silverton after moving from Wisconsin. Dr. Ralph served in many professional leadership positions, as president of the Oregon chiropractic associations, as well as the President of the American Chiropractic Association. He was president of the International College of Chiropractic for twenty five years. He practiced for 56 years in Silverton until he passed away in 1999.
Dr. John was raised in Silverton, and joined his father in practice in 1971. He served the Silverton community as a doctor for 43 years. Dr. John served as the president of the Oregon chiropractic associations twice. He lobbied on behalf of several public health issues before the Oregon state legislature. He continued to study health research and developments, including chiropractic treatment methods, nutrition, healing therapies and environmental toxicity issues throughout his life.
John and Ralph practiced together in Silverton for 28 years. In 1974, they were joined by John’s brother-in-law, Dr. Steve DeShaw, who continues to run Northwood Health Center in Woodburn. Throughout their time together, Schmidt Chiropractic served as a training ground for some of Oregon’s best Chiropractors, two of which continue to work in Silverton. Others he trained have gone on to become leading doctors throughout the state.
Ralph and John’s dedication to providing natural health care options, is largely credited as the reason for the large alternative health care community in Silverton.
Dr. John will be best remembered for his kindness, his dedication to providing his patients excellent care, and his ability to heal.
We know that many patients will feel an incredible loss with the passing of Dr. John. But, we know that you also need to find a new doctor to help you with the treatment that Dr. John was providing. We attempted to find a replacement but, failed to accomplish this for the benefit of Dr. John’s chiropractic patients. There are many options available to you, and we wish you the best in finding a new doctor that is best suited to your health care needs. You can obtain your patient records from Dr. John’s brother in law:
